Rock the Locks – Fave Artisan Tips for Fleece Locks to Yarn

Jenn is a “super creator” customer; fun and adventurous with fiber wisdom to boot. She shared her step-by-step for locks to yarn using bi-colored CVM locks and she rocks it!

Enjoy!

Jenn jumps in sorting 4 oz. of lightly pre-scoured locks by color, hand combing the darker first with just 2 passes for a textured yarn. She makes super easy, satisfying rolags.

She finishes the singles and plies against each other from a center pull ball. High summer humidity with a touch of lanolin on the locks proves a challenging draft (plus sticky hands). A light scour of the skein as Jenn sets the twist and voilà! A lofty, soft skein of DK weight yarn.

Lightly scouring the light batch of locks for easier processing, Jenn fluffs the freshly scoured locks and puts 2 passes through the drum carder, deciding not to flick tips before carding to give more texture.

Jenn opts for a fun, subtle striping in her yarn so divides the balls for roving into even sections of the different fleece colors for a traditional 2 ply, and matches those singles during plying. A soak in warm water sets the twist on the sport weight yarn.

This gorgeous skein captures all the sublime color nuance of a fresh Romeldale CVM fleece. Simply lovely, lovely yarn. What is striking to us about her yarn is that it looks so much like the beautiful pattern in the original fleece, which doesn't always happen.

Project 4 oz of locks yields 300 yds DK and sport weight yarn.
